Himalayan Pink Salt is unprocessed, raw mineral mined by hand from caves that formed 250 million years ago. The salt comes from mines 5,000 feet below the Himalayan Mountain Range. Said to be over 99 percent pure, the Himalayan salt’s color as well as its hues from white to pink to red, are indicative of its mineral content.
With trace amounts of iron oxide that account for its signature ruddy pigment, and 84+ minerals and trace elements, make Himalayan Pink Salt the most beneficial and purest form of salt. Ancient salt mines of the Himalayas
Himalayan Pink Salt is unprocessed raw mineral mined by hand from caves of the Khewra Salt Mines in Pakistan. Formed 250 million years ago, it is the 2nd largest rock salt mine in the world with estimated total of 220 million tones of salt deposits. Today, Khewra Salt Mines produce around 325,000 tons salt per annum.
The salt reserves at Khewra were discovered when Alexander the Great crossed the Jhelum and Mianwali region during his Indian campaign. The mine was discovered, however, not by Alexander, but by his army's horses, when they were found licking the stones. Ailing horses of his army also recovered after licking the rock salt stones.
Khewra Salt Mine is a major tourist attraction, with around 250,000 visitors a year who tour the mines on a purpose-built train. Attractions inside include the caves, artistic salt carvings, and a salt bridge with no pillars over an 25- meters (80 foot) deep brine pond. Himalayan Salt is the most beneficial and purest form of salt.
